I have always been in this dilemma, I have been asked of my opinion in matters and have been forever battling with the thought, should I be frank about it or be safe and give a diplomatic answer?
It is really not that easy to take a stand, be blunt and point blank, blatantly let them know what you think about. There are things that stop us from being frank and those being
1) you hurt the other person
2) they see what you really are
About hurting the other person, i would say it all depends on what kind of person are we talking about here. Some are like made of buffalo hide and you can easily tell them the truth, they are open to criticisms and they take it in their stride, It is the weak- hearted ones where we hesitate. but shouldn't they be told the truth? so what if they are hurt now, they want your opinion. the truth. what else could they be asking your opinion for?
by being frank you are being honest, they will know the real deal, atleast from your point of view and the other person, however bitter it is, deserves to know the truth. i am saying this specifically ,only when you are asked of your opinion, be honest. i am only talking about "opinions" here.
so they see what you really are, so what? it is going to be evident at some point of time by your actions who you really are. its not something you can hide forever unless you are a master in deception. people are not that dumb. better to speak your mind and let them know this is what you think.
but yes, be ready to face the music once you have taken a stand. diplomacy helps you to wriggle out of awkward questions and situations, once your frank opinion is out there, it could work for you or totally against you. It could cause a hue and cry if you are ,a Somebody, whose statements cause headlines. diplomatic answers save a lot of trouble, but seriously, honesty is the best policy (when it comes to opinions).
